lock it. Check it. |

Good Morning
"Lock It and Check It"
is a core West Midlands Police campaign designed to combat "signal jamming" and opportunist vehicle crime. The campaign highlights a simple but critical flaw: many drivers press their key fob and walk away without verifying the car actually locked.
The "Signal Jamming" Threat Professional thieves use jammers—small electronic devices that block the signal between your key fob and the car. When you press the lock button, the jammer prevents the car from receiving the command. You walk away thinking the car is secure, but the doors remain unlocked, allowing thieves to step in and steal valuables or the vehicle itself without causing any damage.
The WMP "Lock It and Check It" Checklist To beat both jammers and simple forgetfulness, the police advise: Pull the Handle: Don’t just listen for the "clack" or look for the lights. Physically pull the door handle to ensure the lock has engaged. Watch the Mirrors: If your car has wing mirrors that fold automatically when locked, wait to see them move before walking away Scan the Area: Be wary of people loitering in car parks or near your driveway, as they may be operating a jammer nearby.
Additional "Secure Your Move" Tips This campaign often runs alongside broader vehicle safety advice: Clean the Glass: Thieves look for suction cup marks on the windscreen as a sign that a Sat Nav or dashcam is hidden in the glovebox. Wipe the glass clean.
Remove All Bags: Even an empty shopping bag or a gym bag can entice a thief to smash a window just to see what's inside. The 2-Minute Rule: Never leave your engine running while popping into a shop or defrosting your windows; "frost-jacking" is a major issue in the West Midlands.
